Teaching Your Puppy Valuable Social Skills

3 puppies: Puppy Kindergarten in Temperance

Like human children, puppies need to develop their social skills when they're young in order to have positive interactions with others. To them, the world can seem like a big, scary place. Together, we can help your puppy adapt to new situations by showing them that new people, places and things are not scary at all. Since 2005, Temperance Animal Hospital has  helped hundreds of puppies grow into happy, loving dogs with weekly puppy classes.

Our classes allow pets to experience new sights, sounds and smells. We recommend that puppies attend kindergarten in the first six to 16 weeks of life; a crucial time when they are still developing their social skills.

What to Expect from Our Puppy Kindergarten

Puppy kindergarten at Temperance Animal Hospital involves a weekly series of four classes where puppies learn socialization and best behaviors. Each week, puppies will experience new situations to help them learn how to interact with people and other dogs. Our classes take place in a safe, secure and fun environment that families and their pets can enjoy together.

The goal is to help puppies react positively to the changes taking place around them. While we offer instruction in basic commands, our puppy kindergarten classes are not intended for obedience training.

Puppy Kindergarten: Deb

Debbie Sasse, RVT

Debbie has been part of the Temperance Animal Hospital team for over 20 years. Her interest in animal care and behavior reaches well beyond her profession and into her personal life, where she serves as a Michigan K9 One Search & Rescue Group Mission Ready Area Search Specialist along with her dog, Rose. Debbie has also participated in specialized behavior courses to deepen her knowledge of dogs, including "DOGS!" at Purdue University and "Puppy Start Right" by Karen Pryor.

Puppy Kindergarten in Temperance: Jamie

Jamie Jackson, LVT

Jamie has been with the Temperance Animal Hospital team for more than 4 years. As a veterinary technician, she is able to help pets during their appointments and during puppy kindergarten. Her special interest in behavior comes from having three dogs of her own, and knowing the vital importance of proper socialization and training starting at a young age. Jamie uses her knowledge to help her clients bring out the best in their pets for a strong, lifelong bond. She has learned her socialization techniques from Debbie Sasse's teaching, and from former instructor, Angela.

What Are the Requirements?

To participate in our classes, all puppies must be up-to-date on their DHLPP (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parainfluenza and parvo) and Bordetella vaccines. They also need to have tested negative for intestinal parasites. In addition, all owners and their puppies must attend an orientation class before beginning the weekly courses.

If you are interested in enrolling your puppy in our Puppy Kindergarten program, please call us at (734) 847-6751. We look forward to seeing you both!

Puppy in a yellow tube: Puppy Kindergarten in Temperance

The entire staff at TAH are so wonderful. Every time I have taken our dogs there we have received amazing care and service. Just recently we had a very frightening emergency with our youngest beagle. I went in hysterically crying and due to the nature of her injury we were there a long time deciding what to do. We were given all the time we needed, never being rushed. I love everyone there!

-Sabrina M.

We took my beautiful, 20 year old cat in today, knowing he would probably have to be euthanized after suffering a stroke. We were heartbroken, of course, but the staff at TAH could not have been more caring and compassionate from the second we walked in the door.
They were sensitive to our pain, and so very respectful and caring with my baby. Thank you to the caring professionals who helped us today.

-Debbie G.
