Parasite prevention is an extremely important aspect of your pet’s lifelong care. Regardless of their age and species, they will always be vulnerable to parasites if they are not well protected. At Temperance Animal Hospital, we offer different preventive options to suit every pet’s individual needs, in addition to their owner’s needs.

Why Prevention is Important

Along with being affected by infestations, your pet can also become ill if they come into contact with a disease-carrying parasite. Some of the most common parasite-related conditions and diseases include:

  • Heartworm disease
  • Lyme disease
  • Ehrlichiosis
  • Flea allergy dermatitis
  • Roundworm
  • Tapeworm
  • Hookworm
  • Whipworm
  • Giardia
  • Coccidiosis

Heartworm disease is one of the most dangerous parasitic diseases. Clinical signs may not show for some time and unless your pet is tested every year for heartworm, their condition may go undetected for years. Without treatment, heartworm disease can eventually be fatal. We strongly advise testing your pet on a yearly basis for heartworm disease to ensure that your pet is safe.

Additionally, we can test for tick-borne diseases and do fecal testing to check for intestinal worms, which can cause diarrhea and other issues.

Options for Keeping Your Pet Protected

We recommend year-round parasite protection because even in winter, fleas and ticks can become active again if the weather warms. However, busy schedules can prevent dedicated owners from giving their pets their preventives on time. To accommodate this issue, we offer a variety of options through our online pharmacy, including:

Bravecto for dogs – a 3-month chewable tablet that protects against fleas and ticks

Bravecto for cats – a 3-month topical solution that protects against fleas and ticks

Sentinel for dogs – a monthly preventive for heartworms, roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and flea eggs

Proheart 6 & 12 – a 6- or 12-month injectable heartworm preventive for dogs

Revolution for cats – a topical monthly preventive for fleas, heartworms, and ear mites

A tailored parasite prevention plan is achievable for every pet. Call (734) 847-6751 to learn more about the dangers of parasites and what preventives will work best for your four-legged family member. If you need refills on your pet’s medication, visit our online store today.
